Cool and breezy Sunday in Philadelphia, chasing summer-like weather with temps in the 90s this week
Welcome to Meteorological Summer and the start of hurricane season in the Atlantic basin. However, it won't feel like summer yet – and thankfully nothing tropical is brewing in the Atlantic.
Finally, no rain! This will be the start of a long dry stretch with mostly sunny skies through Thursday. Sunday be the coolest of the next seven days. We start a huge warm-up Tuesday and chase the 90s on Wednesday and Thursday. The last time we were in the 90s was late August of last year.
Sunday will see highs near 70 degrees and northwest breezes continues. A stray sprinkle is possible north and west, but the day will be mainly dry and pleasant.
Eyes to the sky tonight for the northern lights. A severe G4 (geomagnetic storm level 4 of 5) is expected with lights as far south as Alabama and northern California. These G4 and G5 storms are rare, the last G4 event was in October, and we missed the historic G5 display last May due to clouds.
That night lights were seen as far south as the Caribbean. According to NOAA'S space Weather Prediction Center (SWPA) there is an outside chance tonight's light show could reach G5 levels, so it may be a real treat.
The best viewing window is 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. Skies look to be mostly clear except for the Jersey Shore and parts of South Jersey, where some clouds may linger through midnight. There is no guarantee the lights will be visible when you are watching, so plan on at least several hours. Use your cell phone to help locate the lights as they develop. The camera is more sensitive to the colors than the human eye.
If you see the lights share your pictures with us!
