2 hurt, 1 arrested after shooting at U of M following H.S. graduation ceremony, police say
Two men are injured and a suspect is in custody after a shooting Friday night on the University of Minnesota's campus in Minneapolis following a Wayzata High School graduation ceremony.
The University of Minnesota says both victims — ages 49 and 19 — have been discharged from the hospital.
The shooting occurred at about 8:20 p.m. outside the arena following the ceremony, Erik Swanson, chief of the University of Minnesota Police Department said in a statement.
Wayzata Public Schools Superintendent Chace Anderson released a statement Saturday saying in part:
Swanson didn't identify the suspect, and the circumstances of the shooting are still unclear. He says U police are leading the investigation with assistance from the Minneapolis Police Department and Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz addressed the shooting in a social media post on Friday night.
"Horrific news of a shooting near Mariucci Arena during a graduation event tonight – a time of celebration that should never have turned into one of fear and sadness," Walz said.
The governor said his office was coordinating with the university, and the "state stands ready to help in any way we can."
