Dodgers legend Manny Mota recovering from stroke
Dodgers legend Manny Mota is recovering after suffering a stroke, the team announced Tuesday morning.
"He is in recovery, where he is responsive to commands and is resting comfortably," according to the Los Angeles Dodgers' post on X.
Mota's son, José Mota, told ESPN that his father never lost consciousness and is currently doing well.
Mota, 87, played 20 seasons with Major League Baseball, beginning his professional career in 1957, signing a contract with the then-New York Giants. He officially broke into the big leagues in 1962, but would spend just one season with the Giants before he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Mota spent six seasons with the Pirates before the Montreal Expos selected him second overall in the 1969 MLB expansion draft. Just months later, he joined the Dodgers where he played for 13 seasons, mostly as a pinch-hitter.
Mota retired in 1982 but remained with the Dodgers as a coach until 2013. He then moved full-time to the broadcast booth.
Mota was inducted into the Legends of Dodgers Baseball in 2023.
"I don't consider myself a legend, just another person who always tried to contribute to the Dodgers and give my best," Mota said at the time. "I consider Dodger Stadium my home away from home, and I consider myself to be an adopted son of the Dodger organization."
